Sir Roderic Thorn

1. Description

1.1. Appearance

Sir Roderic Thorn appears as an imposing suit of exquisitely crafted plate armor with no living body inside it. The armor is polished silver with noble detailing, built for mobility rather than sheer bulk. He carries himself with the posture and precision of a lifelong duelist.

A rapier is almost always in his hand. Even though nothing remains beneath the armor, every movement feels distinctly human: measured steps, restrained flourishes, and the habits of a swordsman who spent decades perfecting the same discipline.

The emptiness inside the armor becomes apparent only at close inspection. There is no face behind the visor, no breath beneath the steel, and no flesh beneath the joints.

1.2. Personality

Roderic is honorable, proud, outgoing, and deeply competitive. He considers swordsmanship an art and judges warriors less by whether they win than by how they conduct themselves while trying.

He dislikes ambushes, dishonorable executions, overwhelming a lone opponent through sheer numbers, and needless cruelty. However, he is not naïve. He understands that real battles are not always formal duels and does not expect every adventurer to live according to his personal code.

His lifelong rivalry with Sir Magnus Corven defined much of his life. Roderic never truly hated Magnus. He respected him more than almost anyone else, and being slightly inferior to Magnus drove Roderic to become one of Lemuria’s greatest swordsmen in his own right.

Even in death, that rivalry remains central to him.

2. Biography

2.1. Legendary Rivalry

Roderic Thorn and Sir Magnus Corven were regarded as two of the greatest swordsmen of their age.

They met repeatedly throughout Lemuria in formal duels, demonstrations, tournaments, and challenges. Magnus ultimately became the more celebrated of the two and was remembered as the superior swordsman, though the difference between them was never great.

Their rivalry became famous enough that stories of their duels outlived both men.

Roderic’s frustration was never that Magnus was undeserving. Quite the opposite: he believed Magnus was the only swordsman he had ever encountered who consistently forced him beyond his limits.

2.2. Death and the Curse

Roderic eventually died, but his soul did not pass on.

Through a curse bound to the armor he wore in life, his consciousness became trapped within the empty suit. His body is long gone, but the armor continues to move, speak, think, and fight exactly as Roderic once did.

Whether the curse was intentionally created, the result of a failed attempt at preservation, or the consequence of another event remains uncertain.

Roderic does not view his continued existence with simple despair. He treats it as an unfinished chapter.

Magnus, meanwhile, died a true mortal death. Unknown to most of the world, however, Magnus’s soul or consciousness became bound to his legendary rapier.

2.3. The Arena

Roderic entered the Black Concord’s underground arena after learning that Magnus Corven’s legendary rapier had been placed among its prizes.

He has little loyalty to the Black Concord itself.

His purpose is simple: ensure that Magnus’s blade does not fall into the hands of someone unworthy of it.

Roderic believes that almost nobody alive has earned the right to wield Magnus’s weapon. His participation in the arena is therefore less about personal glory and more about guarding the legacy of his old rival.

If another swordsman were to genuinely prove worthy, Roderic would be capable of accepting that—even if doing so would force him to admit that Magnus’s legacy no longer belongs to the past.

3. Character Information

3.1. Fighting Style

Roderic is a master duelist built around precision, speed, defense, and punishing mistakes.

He favors:

  • rapid rapier combinations,
  • parries,
  • ripostes,
  • disarming strikes,
  • controlled footwork,
  • and isolating a single opponent.

He does not willingly strike unconscious or clearly defeated opponents.

Against another skilled swordsman, Roderic becomes noticeably more animated and enthusiastic. A worthy duel is one of the few things that still makes his cursed existence feel alive.

Magnus Corven’s RapierLegendaryYesThe weapon Roderic seeks in the Black Concord Arena. He believes only a truly worthy swordsman should be allowed to wield it.

4. Appearances

  • Black Concord Arena: Roderic appears as one of the arena’s most dangerous competitors. He participates specifically because Magnus Corven’s legendary rapier is being offered as a prize.
  • Potential Duel with Aerenthal: Roderic may recognize Aerenthal as a serious swordsman and challenge or test him personally rather than treating him as just another arena opponent.
  • Magnus’s Awakening: If Magnus speaks from within the rapier, Roderic immediately recognizes the voice of his former rival.

5. Relationships

  • Sir Magnus Corven: Roderic’s lifelong rival, greatest opponent, and one of the people he respected most. Their rivalry was intense but never based on hatred.
  • Aerenthal: A potential successor to the tradition Roderic and Magnus represented. Roderic is likely to judge him harshly before offering genuine respect.
  • Black Concord: Roderic has no meaningful loyalty to the organization. He uses their arena only because it currently possesses Magnus’s rapier.

6. Quotes

  • “A blade like that is not a trophy.”
  • “If you wish to carry Magnus Corven’s sword, then show me that you understand what that means.”
  • “Again. Your footing was poor.”
  • “I did not come here to win. I came here to make certain the wrong person does not.”
  • “Magnus?”
